    Swine flu
 
One of the difficulties of writing a column in a monthly journal is producing material that is topical. Submission date is about 2 months in advance, so there is always an element of hanging on until the last possible minute in case a topic of major interest arises. As I write, the first confirmed case of swine flu has been confirmed in the Primary Care Trust where I am a GP tutor. I am not going to predict the future. However, there are already learning points.

Communication between health care professionals and with the general public seems to be of paramount importance. At the beginning of the week, I read the algorithm when I came into work. By the time I saw a patient who seemed to fulfil the criteria for action, the algorithm had already changed.
