Each month, Crammer's Corner features information and practical advice to help you learn the core knowledge and skills described in the RCGP curriculum and prepare for the new MRCGP assessments.

This month, Crammer's Corner highlights the best e-Portfolio tools to use for collecting the various types of evidence needed for Workplace-Based Assessment.

 Abstract
 Collecting your evidence of...
 Which e-Portfolio tool should...

The evidence in the e-Portfolio is collected using a range of different data collection tools. Some of these tools must be completed at various times over the course of the whole 3-year training period, according to a minimal requirement timetable. The e-Portfolio tools include the following.

  • Multi-source feedback (MSF)

This is a web-based tool designed to collect and evaluate feedback of your peers and colleagues.

  • Patient satisfaction questionnaire (PSQ)

This is designed to collect and evaluate feedback from your patients.

  • Case-based discussion (CBD)

This is a structured interview designed to assess the your clinical and professional judgement in cases selected for discussion by the trainer or the trainee.

  • Consultation observation tool (COT)

This is a tool designed to help trainers assess videoed consultations and is based on the previous Summative Assessment and old MRCGP video criteria.

  • mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini-CEX)

This is a validated case-based discussion tool and is used in place of the COT while you are working in secondary care. You need your consultant's input to complete this tool.

  • Clinical Supervisors Report (CSR)

This report is completed at the end of each secondary care post by your ‘clinical’ supervisor (i.e. your consultant—not your ‘educational’ supervisor)

  • Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)

This is a tool for assessing your practical clinical skills by direct observation.

Further details of these tools can be found on the RCGP website (www.rcgp.org.uk)

These Workplace-Based Assessment tools are not intended as tasks you either ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. They are designed to gather information to provide you and your educational supervisor with evidence of your performance. This enables productive feedback, identification of learning needs and suggestions for your future development.

In addition to Workplace-based Assessment, which requires you to demonstrate a broad coverage of the curriculum, some areas of the curriculum are assessed by other parts of the nMRCGP. For example, your clinical knowledge will be tested in the Applied Knowledge Test and your consultation technique and problem-solving skills in the Clinical Skills Assessment.

Which e-Portfolio tool should you use if you need to collect additional evidence?

You may find that you and your trainer identify some professional areas of competence where you have yet to demonstrate sufficient evidence of performance. You can use the e-Portfolio tools to find additional evidence to fill these gaps.

The following table describes the behaviours assessed in each of the 12 professional competence areas of Workplace-Based Assessment, the curriculum domain from which that competence area has been derived and the most appropriate e-Portfolio tools for collecting the relevant evidence.
