A 19-year-old student telephones you to say that she has forgotten to take one of her combined oral contraceptive pills (Microgynon 30). She is 18 hours late and on day 10 of her cycle. She has had recent sexual intercourse.

Which one of the options below represents the correct advice?

A. Give post-coital contraception for 1 day then continue the COC within 12 hours. No extra precautions needed.
B. Give post-coital contraception for 1 day then continue the COC within 12 hours. Advise extra precautions for seven days.
C. Stop the COC for this cycle and recommence at next normal period discounting any withdrawal bleed.
D. Take a COC immediately, one in 6 hours and take extra precautions for seven days.
E. Take a COC immediately, one in 6 hours with no need for extra precautions.
